Associate Non-Singing Membership in the University Glee Club of NYC

What is Associate Membership:

UGC Associate members are "members" in every sense of the word. Since its foundation in 1894, The University Glee Club of New York City has been supported by a generous group of Associate members-people who enjoy listening to choral music in this city's finest musical and theatrical venues. The UGC regularly entertains audiences at Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher and Alice Tully Halls and have performed at other prestigious venues, such as Carnegie Hall and the Church of Saint Thomas Fifth Avenue.

Associate members are the lifeblood of the UGC and form a network of friends, supporters and participants who attend club's concerts and events. Members are encouraged to join in the numerous activities promoted by the club. These include attending rehearsals and our post rehearsal gatherings, affectionately referred to as Afterglows-which offer a variety of unique musical entertainment by both members of the club and invited performers.

Even more importantly our the club's Two Annual Members Concerts which take place in January (the "Winter" concert) and May ("Spring"). These major productions are the high points of the UGC season and frequently feature top-ranked collegiate choruses as guest performers. Following the concerts are our Black-Tie Gala Afterglow events. These elegant post-concert parties are wonderful occasions, held in the premier urban spaces available in this marvelous city. Please consider joining us in singing, dancing and dining the night away.

Historical Perspective:

Associate Members have a long history with the UGC starting in 1895 where the audience included members of New York's best-known families.

The first Members Concert was held on January 26, 1895 in the original Madison Square Garden. In the audience, there were 126 associate (non-singing) members and among the luminaries were Mrs. John D. Rockefeller, the Hon. Joseph Choate, Chauncy DePew, J. Arden Harriman, the Hon. Seth Low, and William B. Hornblower. At the second concert in May, 1895 Mrs. J. Pierpont Morgan became an associate member.
